HEALTH BENEFITS OF LIME AND HONEY

Lime and Honey are two must haves in my house. I use honey as a substitute for white sugar. I remember a friend of mine visited me once and she wanted to drink garri (drinking garri is local to Nigerians, i.e.  eating dried cassava with cold water as opposed to hot water), she was astonished when I told her to use honey to sweeten her garri. I'm not a tea person, but my parents are, and a cup of tea for them is not complete without limes.

Limes are an excellent source of vitamin C. Vitamin C is one of the main antioxidants found in food. Limes are good for detoxifying the body. It helps promotes digestion of food and helps to cure digestive problems like constipation. The acids in lime help in cleaning out the excretory system. Regular consumption of lime juice with salt can help prevent and treat constipation. To cure constipation, lime juice should be consumed first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. Other problems like indigestion, nausea, vomiting and heartburn can also be cured with lime. One main health benefit of lime juice is that it prevents the eyes from macular degeneration and aging. Lime contains flavonoids that help protect the eyes from infections. Lime is low in cholesterol, sodium and saturated fats and therefore beneficial in maintaining good cardiac health. Studies show that limes help with weight loss. The citric acid contained in lime is said to be an excellent fat burner. Fresh lime juice hardly contains any calories and is a much healthier option compared to other canned and sweetened beverages that are loaded with empty calories. Lime water helps in detoxifying the body that in turn helps in regulating metabolism leading to healthy weight loss.

Honey is a substitute for sugar. It contains flavonoids, antioxidants which help reduce the risk of some cancers and heart disease. The antiseptic properties of honey relieve acidity in the stomach and alleviate digestion. Honey is a great natural source of carbohydrates which provide strength and energy to our bodies, Studies show that honey is effective in instantly boosting the performance, endurance and reduce muscle fatigue of athletes. honey can be a powerful immune system booster. Its antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties can help improve digestive system and help you stay healthy and fight disease. Studies show that honey can help treat minor acne by attacking the bacteria that cause outbreaks while moisturising the skin to aid in rejuvenation.

A Few Honey and Lime Remedies

Honey and lime with hot water would help cure a cold. I rarely take drugs when down with a cold. This mixture has helped relieve my family and me for many years.

Squeezing some limes in warm water with a tablespoon of honey helps to detoxify the body. To be more effective, the mixture should be drunk early in the morning on an empty stomach.

Sucking on a lime would help stop nausea.

Slowly swallow a tablespoon of honey to cure sore throats and coughs.

Gargle a mixture of honey, lime and salt to help soothe inflammation caused by sore throat.

NUTRITIONAL BENEFITS OF ZOBO/SORREL DRINK

z obo/sorrel was a must have during family gatherings. As children, we loved drinking it, not only because of how nice it tasted, but also because it coloured our lips and tongues red. Zobo (Nigerian) or Sorrel (Jamaican) is a red coloured drink made from a flower called Hibiscus sabdariffa.  The sorrel plant contains a wide range of vitamins and minerals including vitamin C, calcium, niacin, riboflavin and a group of compounds called flavonoids. Flavanoids not only gives the sorrel plant its deep red colour, but, are also rich in antioxidants which rids the body of toxins. The sorrel plant also contains nutraceleuticals, which are said to be helpful to the health. Nutraceleuticals can help prevent and treat several diseases including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and cancer.
